DIY Bedroom Decor Ideas

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary.  From candles and scents that you really love to posters of quotes and inspirational messages that help you stay motivated, your bedroom should be a reflection of not only your personal style but also your true self.

But what if we don’t have the money to go all out? After all, not everyone is on the same budget. If your dream bedroom is a little too pricey, we’re here to help.

Below we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite DIY (do it yourself) bedroom decor projects so that you can get your ideal bedroom on your ideal budget.

1. Fiber Wall Art

The team at A Beautiful Mess always has great style and recently posted this beautiful fiber art wall piece. It’s a relatively simple project — all you need is a wooden dowel rod, chunky yarn, and string. Start creating your very own fiber wall art and your room will look chic in no-time.

2. Mason Jar Sconce

Do you have a wall that’s a little too bare? Spice it up by adding in a mason jar sconce (or four)! We love the rustic vibe of the leather and reclaimed wood that Shelterness put together. Put your favorite flower, air plant, or even succulent in the jar to give it some color.

3. Popsicle Hexagon Shelf

Are popsicles your favorite during the summer? It’s the perfect time of year to start saving your popsicle sticks to make this handy hexagon shelf. You’ll need about 100 sticks to make the hexagon project, in addition to your chosen wood stain and paint brush. If hexagons aren’t your favorite, find a new template! Any shape can work (we recommend trying the honeycomb!).

4. Hanging Nightstand

If your room is on the smaller side, a hanging side table can help give the illusion of more space. The process can vary depending on the piece of material you work with for your base. Apartment Therapy put together a great list that ranges from really simple pieces of wood that you can buy at your local craft store, to more refined pieces that were specially sourced.

5. Wood Crate Nightstand

One of our favorite (and cheapest) projects is this rehabbed nightstand. Jacquelyn from Lark & Linen sourced the wine boxes from a local liquor store and simply bought a good wood stain to touch them up. You can easily distress these for a more rustic look.

6. Custom Throw Pillows

Throw pillows are a great way to add a little bit of life into a new space. The expert DIY-ers at Brit & Co have put together a few different ways to make a pillow perfectly suited for your space. From word stencils to more classic linen designs, they cover it all.

7. Hanging Notepad

Simple, but effective. A hanging notepad could be the perfect addition to a desk or workspace in your bedroom. This project can vary as much as you want it to, but we love the leather and wooden elements that Design Sponge created with the original project.

8. Wooden Headboard

Headboards can get expensive pretty quickly. We love this IKEA hack from Sugar & Cloth that can transition a basic white Ikea headboard into something you’d see at a high-end retail store.  All you need is the basic Ikea headboard or shelf and a barrel of stikwood, and you’re good to go. Count us in on this one.

9. Bedside Bench

The team at A Beautiful Mess fell in love with their office rug so much that they decided to recreate it as bedside bench. You don’t have to use a super expensive rug for this project — any rug will do. They note that your rug should be 2-3” longer and wider than the bench to allow room for it to wrap around. The rest of the material (plywood, hairpin legs, etc.) can be found at your local hardwood store or at the links listed in the ABM post.

10. Copper Ladder

A copper ladder is a great piece to really tie a room together. From layering extra blankets and comforters or scarves and sweaters, it’s versatile and can really be used however you want it to. The copper in this project can add an additional refinement to the piece and make it look like a stand-out that you saved months for.

11. Rustic Side Stool

A side stool is such a versatile item to have in your bedroom. Books, plants, clothing — it can really be used for anything. This project looks really complicated and involved, but it’s surprisingly simple.
